Taxicabs, also called just cabs or taxis, are a kind of single passenger or small group public transport. Taxis act as vehicles for hire, and transport people between locations of their choice for a fee. Unlike buses and trains, the passenger determines the pick up and drop off points, not the driver. There are four major kinds of taxicab, though they may not be called by these names, depending on location.

Give them a wave. Hackney carriages are available for hailing or public hire, and can be hired on the street. Private hire vehicles are also available, and may be called minicabs. Private hire taxis are available only by pre-booking - you can’t hire them on the street. Jitneys, or taxibuses, are a type of bus/taxicab hybrid that operate on preset routes like a bus. Limousines are also a kind of taxi, but are usually only available by pre-booking.

Taxi culture varies from city to city. The first hackney carriages started operating in the early seventeenth century in London and Paris. The first service we can document was started by a man called Nicolas Sauvage in Paris, and dates from 1640s. His vehicles were called fiacres, since the major vehicle depot in the city was near a shrine to St. Fiacre. In French, this term is still used to describe horse drawn carriages for hire. The Hackney Carriage Act was passed in London in 1635 and was the first legislated control on vehicles for hire in English. Eventually hansom cabs replaced older vehicles due to being faster and safer.

The next major advance in taxis was the invention of the taximeter. This device, originally mechanical but now often electronic, calculates the fare in the cab. The first modern taxicab equipped with a meter was the Daimler Victoria, built in 1897. Gas powered taxicabs started operating in Paris in 1899, in 1903 in London, and in 1907 in New York. During the twentieth century, taxicabs became more and more common, partially due to the integration of two way radios into them in the 1940s. This worked more efficiently than the previous callbox method. In the 1980s, computer aided dispatching came into being, and was a significant innovation.

One of the common traits among taxi drivers is that experienced ones are expected to have a strong knowledge of all the places their customers may wish to go. However, as time goes on and technology advances, more and more taxicab companies are beginning to use GPS tracking in their vehicles. This augments the traditional printed map included in most taxicabs. Poorer countries generally still rely on the driver’s memory and the map, since GPS is not always available. Despite the availability of this technology, some areas that have the option of using GPS tracking do not make use of it. London’s black cab taxis, for instance, still rely on strict training of their drivers instead. Minicabs, on the other hand, are making use of this technology much more frequently.

Although Orlando, Florida is probably the theme park capital of the world, there are plenty of other attractions to keep visitors occupied if they are not that keen on non-stop roller coaster rides. There are many churches, museums, parks, markets and unusual tourist attractions to keep the most determined visitor happy. Everything a visitor could possibly want is in Orlando and that is why people return year after year.

It is a warm and welcoming place that enjoys looking after people with its many shopping malls, restaurants, clubs and bars. Of course this article can only brush the surface of what you can see and do on an Orlando vacation but there is so much more than just theme parks that it would be a shame not to mention them.

Central Florida Zoological Park is one of the major reasons to visit Orlando as the zoo is home to more than 400 animals and started out as just a collection in the Sanford Fire Department, but developed into a local zoo back in 1975. Even though it is privately owned, it is run by a charitable group with the intention of providing classes for children and protecting species that are only found in Florida and other world wide exotic animals.

You may have heard of the name Tiffany’s but did you know that it was way back in 1942 that the Morse Museum in Winter Park that started displaying the collections of Louis Tiffany. Tiffany glass, clayware and ornaments are all on display here including a specially designed chapel interior shown at the Columbian Exposition back in 1893.

If you are looking for a variety of night life then it is in abundance in Orlando with two popular places being Universal’s Citywalk and Disney’s Pleasure Island, both of which are open until very late and cater mainly for adults with a range of street entertainment, bars, restaurants and clubs. Whilst it may on the surface appear to be a town designed for the entertainment of children that could not be farther from the truth with adults equally well looked after.

Another popular attraction for people on an Orlando vacation is the Orlando Science Center and is in fact one of the largest buildings of its type allowing the visitor access to ten huge exhibition halls which range from the Florida swamplands to the surface of Mars and much more. If locomotives are your preference then you need to go along to the International Trolley and Train Museum which has fourteen trains running simultaneously in mountains, wilderness, urban areas and includes three waterfalls that use 12,000 gallons of water per hour.

If you have seen the Titanic-ship of Dreams film then you will enjoy the exhibition along International Drive that tells the story using large sets and depictions from the ship as a background, to the often eerie tale. Of course if you prefer something more relaxing then you should visit Lake Eola Park, situated in the heart of downtown, is the city’s main attraction with 43 acres of beautiful sidewalks and a boating lake.

But no trip to Orlando would be complete without a trip to the Walt Disney World Resort which comprises of four main theme parks plus water parks or Universal Studios resort complex which is equally as popular in this something-for-everyone town. Orlando has enough tourist attraction to last a year but the next time you visit, why not try one or two of the others less well known but just as impressive places.

Away from all the hustle that Orlando has in abundance is the wonderful Lake Eola Park in the heart of downtown has beautiful sidewalks in over forty acres and it is possible to spend a peaceful few hours here.

Of course how could you possibly visit Orlando and not go to at least one theme park and for those of you who are unsure; Disney has four main theme parks, not including the water parks, and Universal has it’s own versions but the beautiful Seaworld should also not be forgotten either. If you have never visited Orlando before, you must try it at least once and it doesn’t really matter when you go if you want fairly good weather but holiday seasons do get busy, especially Christmas; well, who wouldn’t want to spend Christmas with Mickey.

Odds are that you are thinking about going on vacation. We don’t blame you, we all look forward to that next vacation, and sometimes it is the only thing that keeps us going on a rainy Monday morning. Before you decide on your next vacation destination, consider Asia. This region is a fabulous area to explore and offers a whole new culture and will give you a new look on life. Each area of Asia offers its own interesting sights, culture and food.

Asia offers great value for the money, as the exchange rates in Asia favors the United States dollar. While you visit Asia you will find that you can stretch your dollar quite far and enjoy many sights and sounds. Many regions in Asia rely heavily on income from tourism, so your dollar will be gladly accepted. This doesn’t mean that you should pay the fist price you are offered, as bartering is a way of life in these regions, so save more by haggling before you commit to buy.

One reason to visit Asia is how diverse the country is. From India to China, you will find everything from desert to lush tropical jungles and amazing architecture. While there is no way you will see everything in one visit, you will certainly get your fill on each and every visit. It is advisable that when you visit you choose an angle to sculpt your visit, either to see the historic sites, enjoy the natural beauty, relax at some of the amazing health spas or just amble your way around. Try not to spread your trip out to too big of an area, or you will just feel hurried and you won’t have the time to enjoy everything there is to offer.

The same is the case with China. Mainland China itself, with its millions of villages, cities and towns to see, will occupy a fair bit of your time. And when you consider that your Asian vacation will never be complete without visiting regions like Tibet, Hong Kong and Taiwan (associated in one way or another with China) you will see that you invariably will crave a longer vacation. And what is an Asian Vacation that does not include the famed temples of Cambodia and especially Angkor Vat in its itinerary? Most Americans ill also make Vietnam a part of their Asian vacation for obvious, historical reasons. Indonesia, Laos, Burma and Bhutan are often visited not just for their scenic beauty, but also for spiritual and religious reasons.

More contemporary Asian vacations will surely touch upon first world nations in the region like Singapore and Japan. While relatively small, both these nations have a standard of living that is comparably better than even life in the US. And each of them have their own reasons for being a part of your Asian vacation package. While Singapore is a veritable hub for everything, Japan is an exotic, far eastern mystery worth spending time on.

Los Angeles, the “City of Angels,” offers an impressive history and a bold look to the future. Whether you are taking in the Kodak Theatre and getting a feel of celebrity Hollywood or finding culturist value in Little Tokyo, L.A. is full of fantastic views.

However, one of the hardest things to do when traveling to Los Angeles is figuring out where you are going to stay. So below you will find various hotels found in L.A. that are highly recommended. Each gives off their own unique appeal, but when you are traveling on vacation there is nothing better then getting a central location to everything.

Accommodating guests since 1923, the Millennium Biltmore has always offered a lavish stay. It is a place where not only Hollywood celebrities call their second home, but many of the presidents of the United States have stayed there as well. Even familiar names from around the world have made their presence felt at this hotel.

A more central location would be hard to find. As soon as you walk out on to the streets you are only moments away from taking in a Los Angeles Lakers or Dodgers game. However, if sports isn’t your cup of tea then you can visit Walt Disney, museums, beaches and more. To put it gently, there is nothing better then convenience on vacation.

Conversely, the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills is one of the best kept secrets. There is nothing wrong with feeling like a celebrity while on vacation and no one does it better. If your love is shopping then you will enjoy the sites of Rodeo Drive that is only five minutes from the hotel. Overall there are several shopping areas available, but it is only the beginning to all the activities.

While impressive, nothing is quite like Grauman’s Chinese Theater. You can spend hours outside the courtyard enjoying all the stars on the Walk of Fame. You will come across names like James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Carey Grant and taking a piece of history with you. Then when you’re done, you can sample the nightlife in Hollywood.

While these hotels are magnificent, we should not forget the rich and colorful history of Los Angeles. The city dates back to the Spanish Empire of centuries ago. Once, Los Angeles was considered the stomping grounds of Spanish rule until after the Mexican-American War. Since then L.A. has become one of the prime places in the states to visit. While most may be in part to the nostalgia around celebrities like Jack Nicholson in the Los Angeles area instead of the hotels, it was the roaring 20s that brought this city to life. While each hotel Los Angeles can give you is something special, it’s the memories you make that can last a lifetime.

At the southeast tip of Marin County sits a beautiful town that is unique in many ways: Tiburon. This incorporated town takes up only 13.2 square miles, but is far from insignificant. In 2004, Tiburon became the first city in the world to eliminate trans fats from all of its restaurants. In 2006, the town launched the Get Ready 94920 program, in an effort to be the first city in the country to train all of its citizens in disaster preparedness.

The population of this community is predominantly white upper middle class young working couples and families, although only about one-fourth of the households include children. All three of the town’s public schools (two elementary, one middle) have been named “California Distinguished Schools” by the state Department of Education.

Wildlife and natural beauty are the two key attractions of Tiburon. Hikers and bicyclists can often be found traveling along the San Francisco Bay Trail. And birdwatchers can see a wide array of species in the Audubon Society’s Richardson Bay Sanctuary. The area also contains several rare and endangered plant species, including the Indian paintbrush and the Tiburon Jewelflower.

As is the case with most of the cities in the San Francisco Bay Area, Tiburon has a colorful past. Inhabited for thousands of years by Native Americans (Coast Miwok), the area was given its name by a Spaniard (Lt. Juan Manuel de Ayala) in 1775, when he anchored his ship nearby. He named it Punta del Tiburon (or Shark Point). Prominent early settlers included John Reed, Dr. Benjamin Lyford and Peter Donahue.

During Prohibition, Tiburon workers got around the alcohol restrictions by getting signals from railroad workers when revenuers boarded a train or ferry headed for town. By the time they got to Tiburon, the seamen, sailors, railroad workers, and cannery employees were all sitting in prayer meetings.

Travel by rail and ferry played a big part in the town’s early days. Although the railroad is long gone, ferry travel for commuters to and from San Francisco continues. Ferries also transport sight-seers from nearby Angel Island on a regular basis.

With a town situated in such an ideal climate and surroundings, planning for growth has often been a challenge for Tiburon. Strict rules have been placed on development, in an effort to avoid “eyesores” and preserve neighbors’ views. Major tracts of land are currently being developed. One of the most challenging aspects of development has involved traffic planning.

In an effort to remain attractive to tourists and residents alike, Tiburon officials decided in 2000 to begin renovating Main Street. Since then, shops and restaurants have been made handicapped-accessible, the walkway along the water side of Main Street was completely rebuilt, and a waterfront park was created.

When planning your trip to the Northern Bay area, be sure you look into the Larkspur Hotels family. Their dedication to the region, and to unparalleled comfort are sure to make your stay in the region a memorable one.

Fishing is a wonderful sport and if you are new to this, do take the time to learn some rules. Observe two basic rules: respect the environment and respect the other fishers around. This will continue to be a part of our daily activity for as long as the sea continues to provide us with its abundance.

Technology may have improved the chance of catching more fish but many of the traditional rules still apply. It is crucial to observe good angling habits as they are necessary to ensure the environment will be preserved for future generations. If you find areas that have been badly ruined by angling, make it a point to leave it if you can’t fix it, do not add to the existing damage.

As much as you have been blessed by nature’s gift through the abundance of natural resources available, makes it a point to do whatever you can to preserve the lakes, waterways and rivers for the generations to come. This can be achieved simply by practicing good angling habits.

Take back whatever trash you have created when you have been fishing and don’t leave anything behind. Do not leave it, dispose it in dumping stations. You do not need to spend much time figuring out the many ways in which this hurts the environment.

As you fish, always use the correct type of bait and fishing gear, remembering that particular areas only allow certain bait and gear. Additionally the limits to the kind and number of fish you are allowed to keep. Do not wait until you have arrived to check for these restrictions. Get to know the restrictions for each spot you plan. There are rules regarding the kind of watercraft you can use, do check them.

Be aware of places where it is against the law to fish. Perhaps they are just protecting the wildlife or maybe there is hidden danger you don’t want to find out! Do not compromise safety and always keep the life jacket fastened and secured in place.

Take your time when removing bait or hooking. If you fish in unauthorized waterways, you can get into serious trouble. Keep in mind this checklist when going out to fish for any length of time: maps, flashlight and your cell phone.

Fishing remains to be a popular past time for many people in America, Canada and the UK. By carefully observing the rules, you can make sure fishing will still be available for future generations to enjoy. Always be respectful of the elements around you and strive to be a better angler at the same time.

An Orlando vacation is one of the most popular amongst tourists, but it is much more than just a city tailored for theme park devotees. Orlando also has the famous International Drive which houses a huge number of attractions, shopping areas and water parks; all within a reasonable walking distance if you want a rest from driving. Although it wasn’t always this full of attractions, it has been pulling in visitors for many years and its popularity does not seem to be diminishing.

If you enjoy shopping then you will love Orlando; it has plenty of malls and stores like Outdoor World which is so large it contains a 17,000 gallon aquarium and you could spend all day there. Besides the major theme parks, a vacation in Orlando can offer so many attractions to spark the imagination that it’s hard to know where to begin.

Although Zoos have taken a bit of criticism in recent years, their value to education and the preservation of species cannot be dismissed and the Central Florida Zoo in Sanford is one of these. The zoo has a charity status and is dedicated to the preservation of all exotic animals, including those that are only found in Florida.

Back in 1942, the Morse Museum of American Art in Winter Park started exhibiting the world’s most extensive collection of the works of Louis Comfort Tiffany. The collection is the most comprehensive anywhere with Tiffany jewelry, art glass, ornaments, pottery, paintings and leaded glass.

Surprisingly, Orlando is not just about fun for the children because adults are very well catered for in this entertainment town. Vibrant Night life is also popular on vacations to Orlando with music and dance available at some of the favorite venues which include Downtown Disney’s Pleasure Island, Universal City walk, and other clubs.

Another great place to visit about twenty minutes drive from Orlando Airport is The Orlando Science Center, originating back to 1955; it is a huge complex with over two hundred thousand square feet of exhibition space spanning ten halls. For lovers of anything relating to trains and trolleys, there is the International Trolley and Train Museum which has fourteen model trains running through the building which actually houses a waterfall.

For something a little different there’s the Titanic Exhibition which tells the story of the ill fated Ocean Liner performed by a character from the ship; the displays contain some original salvaged items and at times the tour is very moving. Lake Eola Park on the other hand has a pleasant 43 acres to stroll around and relax or perhaps a little boating on the lake.

Not all theme parks in Orlando are based purely on rides as the fantastic Seaworld will attest but if you want rides then you have the Disney resort theme parks and Universal studios too. Everything you need for your vacation is in Orlando; a place that’s open all year round but if you want to escape huge crowds then avoid the holiday seasons, in particular Easter and Christmas.

Let me tell you about a really cool website I “discovered” last week! If you, like myself, enjoy natural beauty and exotic places, you have got to check out this site. It is filled with articles about places from all over the world, including every continent and many tropical islands. I was truly amazed by the diversity of the site, and how well they covered so many different locations.

The first article I saw was about Australia, and Australia has always fascinated me. They have some of the most unique wildlife on the planet, such as the kangaroo. But the uniqueness extends beyond the land, also, because the Australian coastal areas also have life forms that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

Africa is a rich continent. And I don’t mean to imply that is only a monetary wealth, although one must point out that Africa is the largest source of diamonds in the world. But the wealth goes much farther, including a historical heritage that stretches back to the earliest tribes of mankind.

The United States of America is a wonderfully diverse country. If you are planning to travel soon, this may be the place to go. Mountain ski trips, ocean diving, or just a leisurely game of golf on a world famous course, you’ll find something of interest in the United States.

I love animals. Mind you, I am not an avid pet owner, but I do have a deep respect for the many, many forms of wildlife that live on our planet. From large cats to holdover creatures from prehistoric times, animals are exciting and intriguing. Whether its land animals, or the fish and mammals of the deepest oceans, you are likely to find articles about them here.

A lot of people can’t think about travel without thinking about beaches. This website I’m talking about has articles about some of the most popular beaches from all over the world. You may not think so, at first, but every beach you can think of has something that sets it apart from all of the others, depending on the climate and how the beach was formed.

Did you know that Dubai has the tallest resort hotel in the world? In fact, Dubai has a large number of “firsts” when it comes to architecture. Many times, I’ve heard it referred to as the playground for the rich and famous, which makes sense when you consider the sheer diversity of tourist attractions that have been built there in recent years.

As you can see from all I’ve said here, this website is truly remarkable. When it comes to travel spots around the world, this site has some of everything. Every continent is represented, every climate, and all types of terrain. I highly recommend it to everyone who has an interest in the world around us.

The Bodrum Peninsula has become a very popular holiday destination in recent years.

There are good reasons for this popularity. With lots of beaches that are quiet and secluded, busy little towns with lots of shopping, restaurants and nightlife opportunities. All this and more is set amongst pretty scenery rich in tradition and history. It is fair to say this is a terrific part of Turkey.

Situated about 35 miles from Bodrum airport, harbour town, Yalikavak is one of those places easy to fall in love with, dating back, as it does to 700 BC and with a distinct horseshoe bay.

However the locals have done a great job of welcoming the modern age and combining it with their origins, creating a charming and welcoming atmosphere, making it both visitor friendly whilst retaining its heritage.

Tranquillity is often a word that is overused when describing destinations for holidaymakers, yet it is a word that is unavoidable when thinking of Yalikavak.

The weather in Yalikavak is suitably fantastic, just like the rest of the region, with one notable pleasant surprise. A breeze that is both refreshing in the heat of the day and welcome for the legion of water sports fans that flock to the area for this very reason, seems to be constantly caressing the town.

That same breeze that provides pleasant respite for visitors also brings us back to the windmills. Yalikavak and windmills enjoy a special relationship and a stroll down the sea front will reveal an ancient treasure in the form of a 300 year old windmill. It has survived well, although restoration work is planned, clearly stating the importance the locals bestow on it.

‘Poplars by the sea’ is the translation of Yalikavak and although somewhat ironically the trees surrounding the area are not actually poplars, they do provide a stunning backdrop to the Aegean blue.

What would a seaside resort be without beaches? Well you wont be dissapointed as there are several within walking distance from the town centre. You can choose to wile away your days chilling on the beach or watching the local fisherman catch your supper that will be served in one of the many restaurants in the evening.

Thursday is market day in town, not just any old market either. The largest bazaar on the Bodrum peninsular becomes the hive of activity for the day and you could spend hours just browsing the many exotic stalls.

So as you consider your vacation, consider Turkey and consider Yalikavak, whether you are a hotel holiday maker, a backpacker or perhaps you prefer a villa rental.

This wonderful part of Turkey is waiting for you to discover and explore.
